An attempt to counterprogram my Catholic upbringing by generating a new visual scripture for my younger self. Inspired by medieval and byzantine mystical texts, these “spiritual reconstructions” take apart the language and imagery connected to my childhood Catholicism and alchemize them with personal memory, esoteric texts, and pagan symbolism to invoke a replacement, reparative practice.
The process involved reading the Maryland Attorney General’s report on abuse in the Catholic Archdiocese I grew up in, which named my elementary school principal and a few familiar priests. The starting point for the work was a visual erasure of that 463-page public document, and from there I followed the destructive energy of collage in small and large formats.
